The Newfoundland colony was practically obliterated through the Avalon Peninsula Marketing campaign of King William's Conflict, the North American theatre of the Nine Years' Warfare (1688-1697). In 1696, the French and allied Mi'kmaq armed forces wiped out all but a handful of English settlements on the island of Newfoundland. I learned a sampling of these sayings from a show in the foyer of the Elgin Theatre in Toronto, which is staging "Come From Away" by Dec. 1. (The title refers to anyone who is not from Newfoundland homemade dog treats and Labrador.
